Are those bullet holes in the no speed limit sign?

I didn’t evne know they had the unrestricted in Australia. It seems like a good place to put it, though. They should keep it unrestricted.

I suspect yes on the bullet holes. Even in australia where guns are far more strictly controlled, signs get shot. I think that’s probably a good sign/indicator that this stretch of highway is desolate enough to remain unrestricted.

It slams the door shut on more than four years of trials on a stretch of road that to date has only accounted for one, non-speeding related, fatality – after a car towing a caravan travelling at well below the speed limit ran off the road.

“Our policy which we have taken to several elections now is that it [Stuart Highway] should be 130km/h,” the spokesman said.

“There will be no open speed limits under Labor. We’re backing calls from experts in the field like the [Northern Territory] Police Association and the AMA [Australian Medical Association] who have called for 130km/h to be brought back in those zones.”

I don’t understand. The article provides ONE off-topic incident that is completely irrelevant to the speed limit situation at hand. If anything, it supports the argument that speed alone does not kill.

No reasons are given to support the re-implementation of speed limits except that they have “top men” working on it.

This. I mean, they practically admitted it.

scrap the unrestricted speed limits on safety grounds, claiming money spent on the trial would be better spent

#1, Scrap the limit based on safety because we need money.

They’re saying that since they can’t just up and ask for money they need to call something unsafe to undermine it, ignoring the fact that there has been one, unrelated-to-speed death in 4 years.

#2, Money spent on the trial.

What money? A few signs bought 4 years ago? That you will have to buy new signs to replace? Makes perfect sense.

It’s basically “We need money, there’s no money to be had, there’s a nice unrestricted piece of highway that could raise us some...”

Look at the last paragraph. The claims about money make no sense except in the sense of “we need money but and the easiest way for us to get it is for you to go milk that road again and give it to us.”

I know that their “top men” are identified as experts in medical and law enforcement, but it’s still vague in that they are not providing legitimate reasons for the change.

Joke’s on them if drivers choose to go the new speed limit. (I know that won’t happen, but just think about it...) The Medical Association won’t have saved any lives, the Police Association won’t have made any revenue, and the money spent on installing the new signage will have all been a waste.

agreed. the arguments seem.... I dont wanna say fabricated, but lets say spun. feels like a political choice, not a logical one.

Why did Australia become a country full of pussy leaders and police? It seems like a burnout is worse than murder, lowering a car is worse than trafficking drugs, and speeding is worse than organ harvesting from poor immigrants.

no, Australia’s government in the past few years made a policy to “stop the boats” referring to illegal immigration, which being an island obviously come by boat. their solution was that anyone caught was detained on islands away from australia. indefinitely. and reports are that the detention centres are insanely poorly run and are violation of numerous international human rights agreements.

so, don’t give a damn about australia’s crackdown on car culture, they really need to fix their immigration policies.

It seems like the have some deep psychological problems. Maybe GB sending all of the prisoners to an island in the middle of nowhere wasn’t the best idea for the basis of a country.

It sounds like they need to fix their government in general.

The world is becoming more and more less fun and more and more like a police state. People die, it’s called survival of the fittest. Sorry your relative was an idiot and could not control themselves. This doesn’t mean people as a whole should lose rights.

i was back home in melb and brisbane last month, its hard to drive the low aussie limits when you are used to being allowed to go 10mile over what are already very generously high us limits

That’s what I’m seeing from being on here. There’s a lot of stuff like “the limit was 65mph, so naturally I’m doing 80mph”. And the police just don’t seem to care. In Victoria there are very few places you can even do more than 100km/hr.

they truly dont. a: there arent speed trap vans like in aus b: traffic just flows typically 10 over, and I’ve passed cops with speed gun out and pointed at me at that speed and not been stopped

c: heres the stunner. was driving the wife’s automatic and just not paying attention (explanation, not excuse) and got pulled over doing nearly 20 over in a pretty low 45 zone. the fine was $50. about the price of a tank of petrol at the time. not really insentive to stop the behaviour
